
I have observed over my 9 years as a therapist and prior decade as an educator that humans, no matter the circumstance, are always trying their best. We may be hampered by trauma, mental illness, and outside factors beyond our control, but we are still aspiring to be what we want to be. Thanks to new research into trauma and its impact on our bodies and minds, we now have evidence that self-criticism is the enemy of insight and growth. Most of us are afraid of self-compassion and think it will lead us to become like those who have hurt us. That conclusion is based on mistaking compassion with indulgence. Growth, whether a part of therapy or a part of everyday life, is true self-care and it takes work and effort. It is always important that we keep ourselves accountable but that does not mean we cannot do it without empathy and kindness.

After graduating college I became a high school biology teacher. I enjoyed my subject matter and my students very much then discovered over time that struggling students were not “lazy”, but suffering from the hardships of life. It was then that I realized I could do more for this world by assigning a very different type of homework. After returning to school to earn my master's, I began working with young adults in their families after they have been removed from their homes by the social welfare system. I was honored to work with a wide range of clients of all ages, diagnoses, and experiences. The additional training and research I received as a part of working with these populations showed that the interventions that help those who have experienced trauma are the same interventions that help us all. I have learned that trauma is everywhere, no matter how polished the exterior is, and I am happy to bring my experience to those who can benefit from it.
I am forever appreciative of the trust that people show me. Therapy is a wonderful opportunity to get to learn about a person in a special way that is only possible in this special relationship. I honestly just love talking to my clients and collaborating with them on making their lives more satisfying and peaceful. Our mental health is the greatest investment we can make in ourselves, as it is the lens through which everything else is viewed. I am grateful for the benefits therapy had on me, and I love being able to share that gift with others.
