Put simply, therapy – also called psychotherapy or counseling – is the process of meeting with a trained and licensed mental health professional on a regular, ongoing basis to help you recognize and change deep-rooted and potentially self-sabotaging mental and emotional behaviors, thoughts, and patterns that are keeping you feeling stuck, in pain, and away from the life you want to live.
The ability to recognize when your usual coping skills are ineffective or are causing additional distress to yourself and/or loved ones, and/or are negatively impacting your ability to do your job, is highly respectable and admirable. It takes emotional strength to bypass pride and ask for help.
First responders are repeatedly exposed to the pain and suffering of others, often witnessing horrific events and, on occasion, some of the worst in humanity. Over time, the capacity to cope with those stressors can exceed your best attempts. When you can objectively recognize your own signs of distress, compromised integrity, irritability, and/or angry outbursts, and an increasing withdrawal from loved ones, friends, or co-workers, or from formerly enjoyed interests and activities - that’s a flag that you’re needing to seek help.
Being in crisis is optional but not required. We are here to help when you need it. You don’t have to wait until your life is falling apart - and we also recognize that sometimes unmanageability can be an important wake-up call to seek help. You can also proactively choose to seek therapy to strengthen your ability to live a well-balanced life, providing service with integrity, peace of mind, happiness, and meaningful purpose.
Increasing sleep disturbance, irritability, and anger are early warning signs that you’re beyond your capacity to effectively cope. Much like seeking medical attention for a sudden physical symptom or a chronic medical condition, working with an Evergreen Counseling therapist can help you update your coping tools, address underlying causes, and proactively strengthen your ability to show up in your life with integrity and self-respect.
Here at Evergreen, we believe there’s a big misconception out there that therapy means just talking and talking about the past without ever taking action on the present. We certainly don’t operate that way as therapists. While we will always create space to talk about your past and the feelings that surface as we explore this, we are very direct and engaged therapists and actively work with our clients to design interventions, exercises, and thoughtful action steps if that’s what you’re looking for as part of therapy. We truly and firmly believe that we’re in the business of creating change for our clients.
The Department pays for the individual therapy services of all sworn members of Union 55, including firefighters and EMTs.
You will be responsible for sessions missed or canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice. If you have an active workers’ comp claim that includes psychological trauma, workers’ comp will cover missed or late-canceled sessions.
At this time, the Oakland Fire Department covers individual therapy sessions only. We would be honored to support you with couples or family therapy; however, you would have to pay for these services out of pocket. Since we are out of network for insurance copies, we provide superbills that many clients submit to their insurance for direct reimbursement through out-of-network mental health benefits. You can find more information here.
Workers’ Comp is a separate organization from Evergreen Counseling. Unless you sign a Release of Information form with your Evergreen therapist requesting they share information with Workers’ Comp, the two organizations remain separate.
No. Your Evergreen therapist legally cannot share your session notes with Worker’s Comp unless you sign a Release of Information form requesting them to do so.
Yes. Legally licensed therapists are mandated reporters requiring limited disclosure of information in the case of suspected child or elder abuse or neglect or serious threat of homicide, or imminent harm to self. Overall, notes are not shared with anyone outside of Evergreen Counseling unless the client signs a Release of Information form granting permission. Within Evergreen Counseling, it is permissible for clinical notes to be viewed by the clinical supervisor, intake coordinator, and practice manager for scheduling, internal quality management, and auditing purposes.
Therapy through Evergreen is completely anonymous. Nobody at the OFD will know you are receiving therapy unless you choose to tell them.
Evergreen Counseling provides high-quality individual therapy to all sworn personnel, tailored to your long-term goals for meaningful, lasting change. Your EAP company provides you and your families with free, short-term counseling, work/life referrals, legal/financial consultations, and general well-being resources.
The electronic system we use for your therapy appointments automatically sends out invoices to everyone who has had a session. Unfortunately, we can’t turn these off for our OFD clients.
We are currently open most evenings but no weekends.
We see clients both in person at our downtown Berkeley office or via video from the location of your choosing.
Our intake director, Jennifer, is responsible for matching every incoming client based on their presenting clinical needs, their personality and temperament, their scheduling and logistical preferences, and all other variables to a therapist whom she believes will be the best match for them. Schedule a complimentary 20-minute matching call with her today to get started.
The first therapy session is what’s known as an intake session. It’s different from a traditional therapy session because this will be a time for our therapists to gather your case history, and together you’ll talk about why you have decided to start therapy. It’s also an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist, to ask any questions you may have, and to see how you feel working with your therapist.
They are generally 50 minutes long.
At the start of your scheduled session time, your therapist will dial you via the video conferencing software. When you accept their call, a window will pop up with their face. You will see and hear them, they will see and hear you, and then you can begin your 50-minute session as you would if you were sitting here in our offices. At the end of the 50 minutes, your therapist will end the video call, and you will both be disconnected from the video conferencing software.
The email and phone number of your therapist should be listed in their email signature.
